Ranveer Singh’s hairstylist breaks down his look for Jayeshbhai Jordaar

Whatever you may feel about Ranveer Singh’s sense of style, there’s no denying that the man’s got guts. Since his debut in Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), the actor has regularly made headlines for sporting extravagant and bizarre outfits. He has been equally experimental with his hairstyles and facial hair, setting off grooming trends across the country – his handlebar moustache from Bajirao Mastani comes to mind. Now, with the release of his new film Jayeshbhai Jordaar, he brings us another interesting look to rave about. We spoke to his hairstylist, Darshan Yewalekar, to decode his hairstyle and ‘stache for you. From the inspiration behind the unique hairstyle and moustache to styling tips for recreation, here’s everything you need to know about his look.

GQ: What is the name of the hairstyle that Ranveer Singh sports in the movie? What are its distinctive features?

Darshan Yewalekar: The name of the hairstyle should be derived from the character itself, so I like to call it the ‘Jayesh’ look. When I went and met with the director, he gave me the longest narration of the film and the mood board he’s making for the film. I got a deep insight into the character, who is timid, fun, peace-loving and yet has bold ideas. That’s what I hoped would translate onto the screen with this look. So, I took a week to come up with a side sweep, pushed back with some curls. It was a borderline caricature.

GQ: How did you style this hairstyle and what tips would you give to someone hoping to recreate it?

DY: Ranveer’s hair is very straight, silky, and soft, which has been a boon for me because it’s easier for me to mould it into the structure and shape that I want. If you too have straight hair, you can achieve this hairstyle quite easily. Apply hair mousse, blast dry your hair, and curl the end part of the side sweep. The rest of the hair should be slicked behind.

If you have curly hair, you’ll have to comb your hair to the side, letting the end curls remain.

GQ: What is his moustache style called? What was the inspiration behind it?

DY: I wanted to give this character a moustache. It had to be a very small town, boxy ‘stache, which is just on the lip line and falls short from the corner of the mouth. I wanted to create my own version of the Chaplin moustache. That was the inspiration for this one.

GQ: How can someone style and recreate the moustache at home?

DY: To recreate Jayesh’s moustache from the movie, trim it on number 1 on a trimmer with a guard. Then, shape the moustache with a cutthroat or an ustraa, making it fall slightly short from the edges of your mouth, and creating a box-like structure on top of your lip.
